Extends Table AFter Creation

Can we Extend our custom table after creation ,Let say if I forgot to make it inherit from any table [extends table ],

Do we know why SerivceNow makes it so difficult to extend a table? I'm wondering if there's a back-end implication that i'm not understanding.
