Reusing variables

I have a questions. Can custom variables be reused in variable sets? what about without variable sets? If so, are there any pros or cons to this?

I'm not entirely sure I understand your question, you only want to use a variable once in a form, as it can only carry over a single value on submission. A variable set however is meant to be utilized by more than one form.

I'm not sure you can use individual variables that are not in a variable set on different forms, I've never tried, but I think one of the items required when you create a variable is what form it belongs to, and there can only be one value there.

For example. If I build 4 catalog items and the field "Request Type" is repeated various time in all 4 catalog items. If I wanted to use one variable for all 4 catalog items will it harm anything?

Yeah that's pretty much the exact use case for variable sets.

I'm not sure what you mean by re-used, but a variable can be added to a variable set post-creation, yes.

I've never done it, but the thing I'd be worried about is the variable suddenly appearing on RITM's that had already been created.   In that case you might have tickets that are inexplicably unsavable because there's a new required field on there that wasn't before (assuming the variable is mandatory)
