Reusing variables

I have a questions. Can custom variables be reused in variable sets? what about without variable sets? If so, are there any pros or cons to this?

For example. If I build 4 catalog items and the field "Request Type" is repeated various time in all 4 catalog items. If I wanted to use one variable for all 4 catalog items will it harm anything?

Just put it in a variable set and use it that way, that is your best option.

So as long as its in a variable set and I'm reusing the variables, I should be good?

You'll be just fine placing the variable in a variable set, then using that variable set into the catalog forms you need to.

What about the UI policies conflicting due to the variables being repeated?
