Design Trade-Offs in ServiceNow – What I Learned from a Personal Project

Hi Community,

While building a personal ServiceNow project in my Personal Developer Instance, I realized that most implementation decisions aren’t about “right vs wrong” — they’re about trade-offs.

A few examples I encountered:

• Flow Designer (readability) vs scripting (fine-grained control)
• Extending Task (built-in features) vs standalone tables (simplicity)
• Reusable subflows (clean design) vs quick inline logic (speed of delivery)
• More automation (efficiency) vs human checkpoints (control)

Even in a learning project, thinking in terms of trade-offs helped me design more intentionally instead of just making something work.

This reinforced that architecture is often about balancing simplicity, scalability, maintainability, and clarity.

Question to the community:

What’s a design trade-off you frequently encounter in your ServiceNow implementations?

Looking forward to hearing different perspectives.
