My organization is working with a partner to implement the ServiceNow platform (ITSM, ITOM, and ITAM). My team does not currently have admin or developer experience. I just hired a Platform Architect but need to clarify the developer and admin roles. What's the difference in the 2 roles and should I have both roles for an organization with 1200 employees and 6000 assets?

Hi @jshipley
In simple words:
ServiceNow Admin: The admin manages the platform and performs day-to-day tasks such as reporting, user creation, data management, cleanup, SLA and notification configuration, and more.
ServiceNow Developer: The developer focuses on actual coding, scripting, table creation, and field creation. Developers are typically responsible for customization and more technical aspects of the platform.
However, from my perspective, there isn’t much distinction between the two roles anymore, as companies increasingly demand that admins have scripting knowledge, understand flows, and handle various technical tasks beyond basic administration.
Better, check the JD of both role and that will provide more clarity to you,.

For an organization of 1200 employees and 6000 assets, having both an Administrator and a Developer is highly recommended.
Why?
- An Administrator ensures the platform runs smoothly, handles user access, and manages day-to-day configurations.
- A Developer enables custom functionality, automation, and integrations to maximize ServiceNow's potential.
- Your Platform Architect can provide guidance, best practices, and ensure alignment with business goals.
