Planning items in Alignment planner

Hi Community,

i have a hard time to understand the logic of Planning items of type "Demand, Project, Epic".

I can see that these are not the same task used in Project management, agile development etc.

I understand that in some cases you would want to have these as in a planning perspective. But when the actual work starts, do you then need to create separate task records of the planning items. Lets say i have a "Project" planning item. Do i then need to create the actual project separately in "Project Management" application. Is there a way of doing this with one click of a button?

If someone could explain the Architecural logic why not just use actual projects, demands and epics in the first place?

Thank you in advance,

Kristoffer

Hi,

The Planning Items has been introduced to bring heterogeneous entities like Project, Demand, Epic etc at one place and perform planning activities. It makes possible planning Project & Agile entities together.

The system has two way syncing between Planning Item and corresponding execution entities so that the user need not worry creating / updating one or other entities. For example when sync is enabled the system creates Project Planning Item for each of the Project record as well as sync any planning action taken back to Project record.

I think that makes sense, Yogesh. We're currently on Quebec but are actually in process of upgrading to San Diego (should be finished in a couple of weeks). We currently do all of our planning against Demand and that mostly works OK. The only problem is once the Demand is converted to a Project, the dates reflected in Alignment Planner Workspace is whatever's on the Demand, even if the Project has been scheduled to different dates. Are you saying that (a) a Planning Item will be created automatically when a Demand is created, and (b) the Planning Item will be updated to reflected the latest status from the Project?

Hey Jon,

When a Demand gets converted to Project, both Demand & Project record coexist in the system. Similar thing is expected for Planning Items in APW. There will be new Planning Item gets created for converted Project that will reflect all changes done on Project record.

Hi Yogesh,

Are there any additional plug-ins required to activate the Sync process you referenced?

Is the Sync process something that runs real-time?  Or does it require a nightly process to complete?

Thanks
