I am a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree. I am very interested in building my career as a System Administrator, particularly in ServiceNow. I would like to inquire whether it is mandatory to have an IT or engineering college degree to secure a job as a System Administrator in a company, or if candidates from non-IT backgrounds with the right skills, training, and certifications are also considered for this role.

You do not need an IT or engineering degree to build a career as a System Administrator, especially in ServiceNow. Many successful ServiceNow admins started with non-IT degrees, including commerce, business, finance, and operations. Your B.Com is not a disadvantage.
What companies really care about is:
Can you understand business processes?
Can you configure and support the platform?
Can you solve problems and improve workflows?
ServiceNow is a business workflow platform, not just a technical tool. Your background in commerce actually helps you understand approvals, controls, compliance, finance-related workflows, and end-to-end processes — all of which are heavily used in ServiceNow.
If you build the right skills:
Hands-on practice in a ServiceNow Developer Instance
- A ServiceNow CSA certification and a solid understanding of ITSM basics
Many people enter ServiceNow roles through:
Junior Admin or Platform Support roles
ITSM Analyst or Service Desk roles
Business/operations roles that evolve into admin positions
Career growth in ServiceNow is driven by skill, experience, and problem-solving, not academic background.
You’re asking the right questions and thinking in the right direction. If you stay consistent with learning and hands-on practice, there is absolutely a path forward for you in ServiceNow.

Hi @igsumit007
I am a ServiceNow trainer, and I come from the same background. I have a BCom and have also completed an MCA. Based on what I have seen in the market, a technical degree is not always strictly required; however, some companies do make it a condition to offer the role.
Now, here are a few points you can consider to start your ServiceNow journey:

Hi @igsumit007
Greetings!
I am a ServiceNow trainer and would be happy to guide you.
ServiceNow is expanding both in depth and breadth these days, so moving forward, career planning needs to be done very carefully.
Anyone who wants to start their career in ServiceNow should begin with the basics—ServiceNow Administration. This helps participants understand the platform, terminology, core concepts, architecture, and foundational knowledge that is used across all ServiceNow products. At this stage, you can prepare for the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification. There are dedicated CSA courses available on Now Learning, either as individual courses or guided learning journeys—you can choose what suits you best.
After completing CSA, the next step depends on the direction you want to take—development or a specific product specialization.
If you want to move into development, CAD (Certified Application Developer) is the next step. This focuses on development concepts, scripting, and other coding-related aspects of ServiceNow.
After that, you can choose any product based on your interest and demand, such as ITSM (which is widely required), CSM, HRSD, GRC, or any other ServiceNow product, and continue growing in that direction.
As a foundation, CSA → CAD is a good path to follow.
Additionally, if you do not want to go into development, there are other career options such as Business Analyst (BA), Business Process Consultant (BPC) (I am a BPC), Technical Support Specialist, or Change Manager (OCM).
