Service Now confimred there is a plugin
Activate the Email Retention plugin (servicenow.com)
Would have been nice if the documentation had referenced the need for a plugin

Hi @jtshone ,
OOB, there's already archive and destroy rules for the sys_email table, navigate to Archive Rule from the left navigator and search for sys_email table.
These are the default rules:
You can modify the created condition based on the requirement
Archived emails(ar_sys_email)
If my answer has helped with your question, please mark it as correct and helpful
Thanks!

Thanks Karan, but i don't see those OOB archive rules on my instance (utah) and no option to create a new rule on the table. I've raised a case now with servicenow. I'd already read the docs you provided.
