Following on from my previous post, this is the third in a series documenting common validation errors that may be encountered in the Micro-Certification assessment simulator tasks.
Rather than providing the exact solution, these notes aim to help you troubleshoot validation errors by highlighting common pitfalls and guiding you toward the correct solution. The aim is to help you understand why validation fails, not just how to fix it.
Note: Some assessment simulator tasks assume that you are continuing directly from previous tasks and therefore still impersonating Platform User, even if this is not explicitly stated in the task instructions.
To build these guides, I deliberately validated the task before completing any steps to see what conditions were being checked. This allowed me to capture the full set of error messages that can appear when validation fails.
This assessment simulator task focuses on core platform functionality including:
- Navigating the platform
- Creating an Incident
- Assigning an Incident
- Adding a comment to an Incident
Below are the validation messages you're likely to encounter, along with some guidance on how to troubleshoot them.
- Did you create a new incident with ALL of the parameters (Cat, subcat, impact, urgency, etc) provided?
Only set the fields specified in the task instructions and ensure they match exactly. Punctuation doesn't seem to be validated however spelling mistakes or additional changes will cause the validation to fail.
Tip: I recommend saving your INC at this stage before moving on to the next step, as this better reflects a real-world scenario. - Did you add and post a comment?
They key here is the word Comment and not Work note.
Double check that you have added the correct type and look out for any spelling mistakes. It is not possible to edit comment or work notes once they have been submitted, so if you have made a typo, you'll need to add a new Comment to the incident.
Tip: It may not seem obvious, but there is a distinct difference between a Comment and Work notes:
Comments are visible to end users via the Self-Service Portal and should only include appropriate, user-facing information.
Work notes are only visible to users with ITIL access and are intended for internal updates and tracking.
As with the rest of this series, the aim here isn't to hand over the solution, but to help you think through the validation errors and understand where you may have deviated from the task instructions.
That way, you're not just completing the simulator task, you're learning how to troubleshoot it which should help if you encounter issues in real-world examples.
