How does the communication with LDAP works when using LDAPS?

I have been asked to find information about LDAP integration in ServiceNow and I have find that it is recommended to set a MID Server and let that MID Server to communicate with the Active Directory via LDAP. I can understand it, but I cannot figure then how is LDAPS work. The secure communication happens between the MID Server and the active directory or directly from the cloud to the Active Directory? Can anybody explain the process for me to understand the flow of this protocol in ServiceNow? Thanks in advance!

Wth LDAPS, you can take either approach. In general, a customer will proxy LDAPS via MID server as allowing an active directory controller to be internet facing is a risk that most want to mitigate.
