Maintenance Plans & Cases opened_at date

We are on Utah, using Workplace Maintenance Management to generate Cases via the Workplace Maintenance Plans.  Can someone help me understand why the Opened (opened_at) date seems to populate with the date that the Maintenance Plan was created?  It's confusing to end users to see an opened date from last year on a brand new ticket.
