CI Classes for technology

Hi,

I am trying to working out where a few Storage and Network devices should sit in the CMDB Class hierarchy. Not being a real expert in this area it would be great to hear any experience people have had.

These are the device types I am looking at:

- PABX

- NAS Disk Array: Is this just a SAN Disk with Storage Type "Network"? or just plan NAS Storage (cmdb_ci_nas_storage)

- NAS Disk Array-Filer: Not actually sure what the Filer is

- SAN Tape Library

- Network Tap

Thanks

Hi Alec,

Please find below my inputs against each:

- PABX: This should be either Voice System Hardware (cmdb_ci_voice_hardware) or Private Branch Exchange (cmdb_ci_pbx_voice). Voice System Hardware is the parent class of Private Branch Exchange. If Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PABX) and Private Branch Exchange (PBX) devices need to be maintained separately in the CMDB, then the Parent class Voice System Hardware will be more appropriate for PABX.

- NAS Disk Array: As Disk array is a type of disk storage system, NAS Storage (cmdb_ci_nas_storage) should be the suitable CI class.

- NAS Disk Array-Filer: Any idea if this is supposed to be file system? Then it will be NAS File System (cmdb_ci_nas_file_system)

- SAN Tape Library: There is no OOB class for tape library. But as it is a kind of mass storage device, the most suitable class should be cmdb_ci_msd (Mass Storage Device)

- Network Tap: As it monitors network events, Monitoring Equipment (cmdb_ci_monitoring_hardware) might be suitable. Network gear (cmdb_ci_netgear) should also be suitable as it is the parent class for most of the key network device CI classes. More information like why Network tap is used in your organization and what kind of attributes need to be tracked would help to identify the most suitable class.
