Service Mapping is Real-Time?

DaveW2

So I just ran across this page which says, in part,

Service mapping functions in real time, automatically updating whenever any aspect of the infrastructure or its components change. With reliable, real-time data...

But as far as I can tell, Service Mapping only updates anything when it is scheduled to.  If someone updates a server at 4 PM, but you have Service Mapping and/or discovery scheduled to run at midnight, then there's going to be an eight-hour delay between the change and when your dependency views and maps get updated.  Correct?  Service Mapping doesn't execute constantly, right?  I know discovery doesn't.

Maybe this advertisement for Service Mapping means that changes to the CMDB automatically, in real-time, update the Service Mapping output.  But that's not how it reads.  It reads like if you go unplug a server, that server will vanish from your dependency views instantly.

Hi Dave,

What you described in the last paragraph in your post is correct - Service Mapping doesn't operate continuously.  When Service Mapping runs a scheduled discovery any updates made to the CMDB are performed in real-time, the same was as Discovery does.

Both Service Mapping and Discovery are part of the ITOM product family - I'll forward your feedback to the outbound product management team.
