Let in Incident form category = Hardware, Software

           Change form category = Network, Database

 

In my customs table there are two field

  1. Table (Reference type)  reference to (sys_db_object )
  2. Category (Choice type)

when a user chose table is incident then incidents category is populate in customs category field. 

when a user chose table is Change then changes category is populate in customs category field. 

when a user chose table in any table then that tables category is populate in customs category field.

not sure what have in mind.
Why would you make a custom table?
If you want to select CIs based on a category you might check Technical Service Offerings.
Then you still are open to use CSDM on a later state. 

Using the custom table you will turn another direction in my opinion.
