Impact of using Dynamic CI Group instead Mapped Application Service

If you have whole Service Modelling based on manual relationship creation between CI and Mapped Application Service, what is the impact of using Dynamic CI Group for Technical Services instead?

Are there any major differences in how these two behave in different ITSM processes?

Hi Marta,

Dynamic CI Groups create CI associations (no CI relations) that might be an impact.
You can use Calculated Application Services (Dynamic Service) that will create CI associations based on manual CI relations. (for a defined number of levels). Or use the Manual Application Service.

I use Dynamic CI Groups only for non-application level to group things like Laptops, Virtual Desktops etc.
For Application solution I use other Application Service classes.

Hi Marta,

Dynamic CI Groups and Technical Services are completely different, there is a separate purpose for each of these, one cannot replace the other.

Dynamic CI Groups are used to create buckets the same type of CIs, an example would be all Windows servers, or all Linux servers, etc.

- For Change Management if a change is opened to patch all the Windows servers, if a Dynamic CI Group existed for all Windows servers, then adding the Dynamic CI Group as the affected CI would add all the windows servers as affected CIs vs adding all the Windows servers manually via updating the filter, searching for all the windows servers and adding 100 at a time, a manual process.

- For Incident/Problem Management it would be the same as the example above.

Technical Services represents a group responsible for the technology, some examples used in the ServiceNow CSDM Data Model Examples PPT include "Platform Services" and "Hosting Services" as Technical Services. (See slide 12 in the attached PPT)

Regards,

Steven

This video explains HOW to relate Dynamic CI groups to Technical Service Offerings (around the 21 minutes mark): (1) CMDB Health Deep Dive - CSDM Dynamic CI groups & fixing data required for audit and incident - Y...
... as I don't think you can yet do this via Service Builder.

I'm trying to attach the PPT again, not sure why it did not get attached to my previous reply.
