Purpose of Added BA user Fields "IT Application Owner" and "Application portfolio manager"

The Business Application table inherits the following user reference fields:

  • assigned_to
  • managed_by
  • owned_by - This field is by default shown on the APM forms with my guess being the intent of a Business Owner
  • supported_by

These fields are added with BA

  • it_application_owner - Shown by default on the form and intended for overall IT owner
  • application_manager - I'm not sure the purpose of this field as I think it's similar to "owned_by". With APM enabled it also adds a "portfolio" reference field that has a portfolio manager on those records but I'd think that is similar to the IT Application Owner level

What is the intended differences between these and which are suggested for use aligning to CSDM?

Owned By (owned_by) - High level business owner?

IT Application Owner (it_application_owner) - High level IT Owner?

I would guess these are intended for someone within IT who is the portfolio manager but i'm not sure how that aligns to IT Application Owner

Application portfolio manager (application_manager)

Portfolio.Portfolio Manager (portfolio.portfolio_manager)

Thanks,

Nate

Nate,

The Business Application table is provided/owned by the Application Portfolio Management (APM) product. The functionality of the Business Application table, though OOB beginning with Kingston, is dictated by APM.

Though there are many attributes available and inherited from the base cmdb_ci table, not all are utilized within each extended table. For Business Application, the APM team has defined the visible attributes/columns on the Business Application CI form. Most of these attributes are OOB while a handful are only included with the full APM capability.

A definition of each attribute is available in our Documentation website, here:

https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/madrid-it-business-management/page/product/application-portfolio-management/task/manage-business-appln.html

You will see, specifically, the following definitions and use of Portfolio manager, Business owner, and IT Application owner:

Portfolio managerOwner of the portfolio, typically from IT.
Business ownerPerson who owns the application from the business side.
IT Application ownerPerson who owns the application from the IT side.

The business application must have a owner assigned to it.

If you are the owner of the business application and designated so in this field, then you can view all the applications for which you are the owner in the My Applications menu.

For Business Applications, we recommend using the OOB attributes displayed on the form and their definitions provided on the documentation website.

Hope this helps.
