Hello ServiceNow Community 👋,

I am exploring opportunities to build and grow my career in ServiceNow. I’m interested in understanding:

  1. How to join ServiceNow-related job roles  what skills and certifications are most valued?

  2. Which areas in ServiceNow (like ITSM, ITOM, ATF, Flow Designer, Virtual Agent, etc.) are in high demand.

  3. Suggestions on free resources, communities, or projects where I can practice and improve my hands-on skills.

  4. Any guidance from professionals who are already working in ServiceNow on career path and roadmap.

I am passionate about learning ServiceNow deeply and contributing to real-world implementations .
Any advice, shared experiences, or mentorship would be highly appreciated

Thank you!

Ashutosh Kumar

Hi @ashutosh2825

I’m glad to see you here, follow some steps in the ServiceNow that might help in your journey

How to join ServiceNow-related job roles & valued skills

Employers usually look for a mix of certifications, platform experience, and transferable IT skills

Core Skills:

  • ServiceNow platform fundamentals (navigating, configuring forms, tables, lists, ACLs).
  • Scripting (JavaScript, Glide API, Business Rules, Client Scripts, Script Includes).
  • Workflow automation (Flow Designer, approvals, notifications).
  • Integrations (REST/SOAP APIs, MID Server basics).
  • Understanding ITIL processes (incident, problem, change, request).

1 - Valued Certifications (progression path):

  • CSA – Certified System Administrator (entry point, often mandatory for jobs).
  • CIS (Implementation Specialist) – focus on apps:
    • CIS–ITSM (most demanded).
    • CIS–HR, CIS–ITOM, CIS–CSM, CIS–Discovery, CIS–SAM (based on specialization).
  • CAD – Certified Application Developer (for deeper scripting and app dev).
  • CTA – Certified Technical Architect (long-term advanced career goal).

2. Areas in ServiceNow that are in high demand

  • ITSM (core) – always the foundation, highest demand across companies.
  • ITOM (Discovery, Service Mapping, Event Mgmt, Cloud Ops) – huge growth, especially with enterprise monitoring.
  • CSM (Customer Service Management) – growing in external-facing companies.
  • Security Operations (SecOps) – SOC integrations, vulnerability response.
  • IRM/GRC (Governance, Risk, Compliance) – big demand in financial and regulated sectors.
  • ServiceNow Platform App Development – building custom apps, workflows.
  • Automation Testing Framework (ATF) – niche, but becoming more requested as testing maturity improves.
  • Virtual Agent + AI Search – gaining traction with GenAI adoption.

If you’re just starting, ITSM → ITOM or ITSM → App Development is a solid roadmap.

3. Free resources, communities & hands-on practice

Free Resources:

  • ServiceNow Developer Portal (developer.servicenow.com) → free PDI (personal dev instance) + training.
  • Now Learning → free CSA fundamentals training.
  • YouTube channels: ServiceNow Dev Program, Basic ServiceNow Learning, The SN Guys.
  • Official Docs: docs.servicenow.com (very underrated but essential).

Communities
:

  • ServiceNow Community Forum (community.servicenow.com).
  • Reddit r/servicenow (good for real-world Q&A).
  • LinkedIn groups (many recruiters post opportunities).
  • Discord servers / Slack groups → peer discussions.

Hi @ashutosh2825 ,

Welcoem to Servicenow Community and Ecosystem. Its great that you want to start your career in this technology.

Skills:-

1) You should understand what is ITIL, ITSM and then core platform features of servicenow.

2) All amdin features, you should be aware of.

3) Based on your job role you need to learn Scripting/ development (if you want to be a developer), Functional aspects and processes (if you want to be a functional concultant, Business Ananlyst, Business process Consultant (BA/ BPC - Incident Manager, Problem Manager, Change Manager, Knowledge Manager, Catalog Manager etc )).

Certification:-

1) CSA- Certified System Administrator( it is expected from everyone in Servicenow ecosystem)

2) CAD - Certified application developer (If you want to become a developer)

3) CIS - ITSM (If you want to be an expert or Implementor of ITSM processes)

Other CIS certification (Certified Implementor) based on the Module you are in.

Modules:-

All the modules are in demand but ITSM is the core and starting point and then you can learn other modules like- HRSD, CSM. ITOM, ITAM etc. It will depend on your interest and your expertise as well. Once you will move in Servicenow ecosystem, you need to see which is your cup of tea.

Free Resources:-

1) developer.servicenow.com to create your PDI (Personal developer instance for practice)

2) developer.servicenow.com -> Learn to learn about  the servicenow.

3) Servicenow University to learn many modules and earn Micro and Mainline certifications.

4) Servicenow Community - You can read questions and answer from differen people to learn. You can also ask anything here if you are stuck.

5) There are multiple Channels to start with:-

a- LearnandGrowwithAtulG - from ATul Grover

b- LearnwithRavi - from Ravi Gaurav

c- BasicoServicenow

d- SAASWithservcienow  etc

Career Path:-

First Create a PDI to practice. Create your account on Servicenow University and start with Welcome to Servicenow Course. Then Welcome to ServiceNow Micro certification (it is free). Then go for  - Servicenow Admin fundamentals Training.  If you are a discplined guy and can do self study consistently then you can go with these but if you are not cosnsistent, disciplined or not intesreted in self study, then my advice will be to attend a proper training. Being a Trainer can help you, guide you, if you want.

Once youare done with all these and you have some handson on PDI then you can go for CSA certification. Once done decide on which module you want to focus (whatever is your cup of tea) and then move in that direction.

I hope i have clarified many things for you. If still you have any question you can ask me or in community.

If my answer helped you, please mark it- solution accepted.

1. If you are just starting with ServiceNow, go through ServiceNow fundamentals course and get certified in ServiceNow CSA

https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en/now-platform/certified-system-administrator-csa-learning-path...

You can understand scripting and development as it would help you with any modules that you would work in future,

https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/learn/learning-plans/zurich

https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/learn/courses/zurich/app_store_learnv2_scripting_zurich_sc...

2. High demand modules keep changing in the market and I would recommend you to choose this based on your background and what interests you. For example, if you have understanding of various publishers, how licensing works and specialization in managing assets, ServiceNow Software Asset Management and Hardware Asset Management would be a great fit. Learn the module that most interests you and explore further modules as per your project requirements and career pathway

3. Register and get a free PDI to practice what you learn as hands-on would be the most essential part of your learning phase

https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/guides/zurich/developer-program/pdi-guide/personal-develop...

Register with ServiceNow University and go through course contents.

https://learning.servicenow.com/

Developer learning plans are easier to understand the modules compared to official documentation and would recommend to start learning in phases, start with New to ServiceNow and later ServiceNow Administration followed by ServiceNow Application Developer,

https://developer.servicenow.com/

If you need any help, you can post in communities and experts can guide you.

4. It is a competitive market and number of ServiceNow Professionals are growing every day. I would recommend to make your fundamentals strong and focus on your areas of strength & keep up to date on the Technology & keep learning and you can create your own successful pathway.

Congratulations on your ServiceNow journey !

If this helped to answer your query, please mark it helpful & accept the solution.
