What does Default Assignment Group do?

On a CWM Boards you can set a default assignment group. Does this do something? As far as I can tell it does not default values anywhere. Is this just information or what is the goal of this field?

I cannot find it anymore but I think I have read in some of the SN University courses that this sets the time zone or any other preference. I cannot find that piece of information to confirm it but perhaps it can gives you directions where or what to search for. 

And also, let's thope that somebody who knows it better will answer it here
