What does Default Assignment Group do?

On a CWM Boards you can set a default assignment group. Does this do something? As far as I can tell it does not default values anywhere. Is this just information or what is the goal of this field?

Hi Thomas, 
The default assignment group field is carried over from the planning item table. As we extend CWM boards from this table, you see it there. It has no logic attached to it.
