The date field should allow only future dates, and the state field should also change accordingly.
When a future date is selected, the state should automatically revert to the previous state it was in before the date change.

It’s not easily achievable because there's no way to track what the previous state was before the current one, and we typically use metrics for that. It might be better to add some validation instead of setting it up this way.

2 things involved
1) use onChange client script or UI policy on date field to only allow future date
Create a UI policy with condition as Your Date Field is before today.
Navigate to Script section & under if script evaluates to true u can write this
alert("Past Dates cannot be selected");
g_form.clearValue('dateField');//use proper backend value
2) you can use before update business rule and set the state value, condition Your Date Field CHANGES
current.state = previous.state;
