Where Ideation Fits in CSDM 5.0

  • Domain: Plan

  • Lifecycle Stage: Strategize / Plan (before design, build, deliver, run).

  • Object Class: Ideation is a business object used to capture and manage new ideas, opportunities, and demands for services, products, or capabilities.

It connects business needs to IT execution by feeding into Demand Management.

 How Ideation Works

  1. Capture Ideas

    • Employees, customers, or partners can submit ideas (through a portal, communities, or directly in the system).

    • Each idea can include description, business impact, benefits, and alignment with strategic goals.

  2. Assessment & Review

    • Ideas are evaluated by reviewers or innovation boards.

    • Review criteria often include:

      • Business value

      • Cost/effort to implement

      • Strategic alignment

      • Risk & compliance impacts

  3. Conversion to Demand

    • Approved ideas can be promoted to Demands.

    • Once converted, they flow into Demand Management (where feasibility, resource capacity, and ROI analysis are done).

  4. Traceability in CSDM

    • Idea → Demand → Project/Epic → Application Service/Business Service

    • CSDM ensures traceability: you can track back from a delivered service all the way to the original idea that sparked it.

The Ideation & Strategy domain represents the ideas, concepts, and considerations for both the creation of new or additional services as well as improvements and enhancements to existing services. These capabilities are part of Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM).

As you can see from CSDM V5, 

  • This is a newly introduced domain in CSDM that represents the business model, ideation, and strategy phase of the lifecycle.
  • Here, the business model often drives innovation and investment direction, we currently help our customers do this within our Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) products.
  • The out-of-the-box data model will enable organizations to incorporate business strategies even if they don’t own SPM products yet.
