I am trying in the Yokohama PDI. I see there are few already created “ Project Time Categories”. I have also created few as sample.

The challenge is I don’t see the default ones nor the ones which I created in the Time Sheet portal.

  1. I would like to know the purpose of this “ Project Time category”
  2. Why is the Project time category not showing in the time sheet portal ? Moreover its not editable only

Hi @prsudhakar123

 1st quetion answer :

In ServiceNow, the "Project Time Category" field, when used on time cards, categorizes time entries for projects or project tasks. This allows for more detailed reporting and analysis of time spent on specific project phases or work streams within a project.

Purpose:
  • Categorizing time entries:
It helps organize and classify time spent on different project-related activities.

  • Reporting and analysis:
It enables users to generate reports and analyze time spent on specific project time categories.

  • Cost tracking:
It can be used in conjunction with financial data to track costs associated with different project categories.

  • Visibility into project progress:
By categorizing time, project managers can get a better understanding of where time is being spent and identify potential bottlenecks or areas for improvement.

Example:
A project manager might create categories like "Planning," "Design," "Development," and "Testing" for different project phases. By assigning these categories to time entries, they can easily track how much time is spent on each phase and identify if certain phases are taking longer than expected.

Second que anw:

Why it's not editable/visible in the portal:
  • Automatic Population:
In many ServiceNow configurations, the "Project Time Category" is automatically populated based on the associated project or task when a time entry is created.

  • Read-only in some cases:
The "Project Time Category" might be made read-only on time card forms, particularly when time entries are created from within a project or task context.

  • Portal Widget Configuration:
The visibility and editability of the "Project Time Category" field in the time sheet portal are often controlled by the specific widgets used in the portal.

  • Workflow Automation:
Some time entry workflows might automatically create time cards with the project time category pre-filled, reducing the need for manual entry.

  • Data Policies:
Data policies in ServiceNow may dictate that the project time category is mandatory for certain states of the time card, such as when submitted or approved.

In summary: The "Project Time Category" is a crucial field for project time tracking and cost allocation in ServiceNow, but its editability and visibility in the time sheet portal are often controlled by system configuration, workflow automation, and data policies.
