Variable of type html do not show in the additional information table in the portal

Hi, in the 'additional details' tab when viewing a request in the portal, the description field does not display if the variable type is HTML.  If I change the variable to multi line text the description shows.  

Does anyone know if this is working as designed?

Yes, this is known behavior and is covered by KB0820434 - HTML type variables are not shown in 'Ticket Fields' widget in Service Portal.  I too am searching for a solution for it.
