ITAM Q: Asset Task - where is it? Can't find it...and it may be a permissions issue on my side....

Long time reader, first time poster. 🙂

I believe Asset Task is for specific action items on an asset...correct? And usually created via automated workflow - deploy, recover, retired, CR, etc. We want to create what amounts to a Child Task on an Incident ticket, but a Child Asset Task on an Asset, so we can assign validation work to our local techs (outside iMAC work).

Example: I find a laptop is still assigned to a terminated person 4 months after they're gone. I create an Asset Task and assign to the appropriate tech to hunt down the hardware, and update the asset record. Yes, this is a manual process; we're trying to correct human shortcomings and clean up a messy house, so we can then move on to automating workflows and be more happy.

Can I use an Asset Task in this way, or what would be the recommended feature or method to go about this? We need unique tasks, so we can run metrics on these "extra" requests for validation.

I believe I need to be assigned an "Asset" role...which I have been told I already have.

I found this: https://www.servicenow.com/community/sam-forum/is-there-a-demo-on-asset-tasks-on-incident-form-i-can...  and watched both videos.

The first one is more automation...our future state.

The second one is more ITAD & Ordering, which I already do. 🙂

The Google/AI tells me this, and I've greyed out creating an asset, since I already have that nailed down. My problems are with the red underlined bits...I simply don't see them, or maybe I don't know where to look..and I've been right clicking, searching under All, etc. for I think too long.

Would anyone have suggestions or be able to tell me where to go? 😉 😄  Thank you!

Hi @GarrettH,

To help you find Asset Tasks, you should just be able to type "Asset Task' into the Navigation menu. Alternatively, you can edit the url and navigate to: https://[your_instance].service-now.com/asset_task_list.do

To view this link and data, typically you'd need one of the following roles based on baseline configuration: asset, procurement_user, inventory_user

To answer your question re their usage, Asset tasks are provided for deploy, replace or swap, or retirement operations for your assets. These tasks automatically update the CI/asset record on the completion of these operations.

For more specific info from ServiceNow and their Docs:

Hi Robbie, thank you for replying. I'm just getting to spend some time on this now.

I'm able to see a single ASTTASK my manager created a year ago, but not how he actually generated it. And I don't think he remembers, either. This is sort of what we're aiming for - think of us as the friendly internal auditors, prompting the local techs to correct their missed work.

Reading the link you provide, I need to know about the highlighted part:

I guess what I'm getting at is while I know and understand the automation part of an Asset Task...how would one create a task manually? We ITAMers in my workplace are not ServiceNow devs, but we're trying to learn, since we're resource poor. 🙂
