Servicenow HAM

Hello Team,

I recently had an interview for a ServiceNow HAM (Hardware Asset Management) position, and the interviewer asked me a question that I was unable to answer:

When we create a consumable asset
when we manually create a CI in ServiceNow,
what are the different ways to create an asset?
Also, if I create an asset, I don't want a CI to be created automatically for it.

Could someone please help me understand this better?

Also, it would be great if you could share some real-time interview questions related to HAM to help me prepare more effectively.

Thank you!

1) When we create a consumable asset

A consumable asset is one that is purchased in quantity and distributed. It is assigned to the consumable model category, and the asset record tracks the quantity that is available and total cost. When consumable assets are received, they are merged into an existing consumable record, if available.

2)when we manually create a CI in ServiceNow

This is not recommended however if you want to, just decide which CI class you need from the CI Hierarchy in CI Class Manager and then go to respective table and create new record and fill required details manually

3)what are the different ways to create an asset?

You can create assets in ServiceNow manually, through discovery/import, via procurement processes, or by converting Configuration Items (CIs), using methods like bulk import, integration with discovery tools (SCCM), creating from models in the Product Catalog, or using dedicated modules for software/hardware asset management
