Where should information about Hardware's physical location be stored

Hello All,

I am looking at the cmdb_ci_hardware and alm_hardware tables and looking for the right table to put information about the physical location of a device.

It not just building information I need to store --> floor, rack number, and slot for rack mountable devices, while things like areas of the building (floor and maybe general side of building) for things like routers and APs. For things like meeting room equipment I would need to put the exact room.

Should this information be stored in the cmdb_ci_hardware table, alm_hardware, or the cmn_location table (which is referenced in the alm_hardware)? I assume i would have to create these fields, but maybe there is an OOB location for these?

Thanks.

Location data within cmn_location should stick to spatial planning e.g

Zone > Room > Place > Floor > Building/Structure > Campus > Site

Information such as racks, slots, etc can be stored as CI records themselves, and relations drawn to the component CIs being stored. This would then be in line with the direction ServiceNow has chosen for the TNI product
