Hello experts!

We want to know why does serial number on CI and Asset records gets deleted when CI is set to "Retired"?

What is the process of retiring CI?

Your time is appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi Lithesh,

Appreciate your response. It does make sense to Archive CI and store it in a different table but what about relationship?

Do you think it would a good practice to have an asset but not related CI? I know in my previous thread I mentioned about keeping only asset and not CI but now as I rethink about this, would that be a best practice?

We are trying to determine what's the best way to repurpose asset? Removing all relationships between CI and Asset?

Thank you!

Hi @Flybook ,

Hope you got my thing since you mentioned to keep the Asset but not CI. So I suggested that. But in general we won't keep Asset with archived CI's . Since it would become a stale record and affect the CMDB health. So, we can configure Archive rule to Archive CI and as well as there related fields like Asset.

If you have any doubt on configure them. Please let me know.

Regards,

Lithesh

I would suggest to Archive both Asset and CI. Since it would be selected records and we can also have the track of Archived assets in separate table.

Are you suggesting to Archive both asset and CI till we are ready to repurpose asset?

Doing so, question still remains on how to repurpose asset? Is deleting relationship the best practice?

Here is what I am thinking instead of Archiving:

If an Asset is revived (put to something other than Retired) after Retired:
Clear link between Asset and old CI, create new asset.

Assumption is that the physical device is "pulled" from it's old purpose "Retired" and then when can determined to Keep ("In Stock") and a new CI should be created.

Let me know your thoughts as i am unsure about this yet.

Appreciate your time!

Even when assets are archived, we also again get back them from the Archive table to the asset table as well.
I would suggest using the Archive rule instead of any other customization.
Even you saying making the Asset without any CI is not a good practice.

Lithesh.
