Regarding CMDB classes, do people use cmdb_ci_spkg (Software) or cmdbd_ci_desktop_software (Desktop Software), cmdb_ci_inf_software (Infrastructure Software), or cmdb_ci_application_software (Application Software) to identify software supported by your organization.
From what I can tell, cmdb_ci_spkg is what the discovery tool uses.
Also, want to keep track of customer applications and who supports them. Would you use once of these four classes to do so?

Hi Kris,
I would recommend the following:
1& 2 go into Application (cmdb_ci_appl) since these are instances of applications
3&4 should go into Software model as purchased s/w assets and instances (or installations ) should go into cmdb_ci_appl and related to software models. SN Discovery (if you have it now or in future) will add discovered installations of 3& 4 to cmdb_sam_sw_install class for correlation with licensed s/w. I also think cmdb_ci_inf_software and cmdbd_ci_desktop_software are also for discovery to use so wouldn't mess with it.

Hi Kris,
Can you give examples of the kind of data you want to track? Yes you are correct the classes you mentioned are used by discovery.
You can also use Software Model to track s/w supported by your organization. Software Asset Mgmt uses the model information and discovered data to report license compliance.
You can use Application (cmdb_ci_appl) to track customer applications. Some treat Customer applications as Business Services ( cmdb_ci_service) also. There is a Service Classification field on Business Service that has a "Application Service" choice to indicate it is an application.

Hi Venkatesh,
Here are the types of applications I would want to track:
- In House Developed Apps such as a ASP.Net related applications.
- Applications developed by our parent corporation, which we use, but don't necessairly support
- Application used by our technical management area, such as Solarwinds or NetApp Balance
- Applications residing on desktops, such as MS-Office or Engineering Apps like Catia.
We are planning on implementing Software Asset Management in the future (a year or so), so we'll definitely want to use software models then, but would it makes sense to use them to track now, or work off the CMDB? Will this paint us into a corner?
Continuing on with the CDMB...
From what I gather, would it make sense to have items 1 and 2 listed in Business Services (categorized as apps) and 3 and 4 as cmdb_ci_spkg?
Or would you go further and separate 3 and 4 out into there respective classes, cmdb_ci_inf_software and cmdbd_ci_desktop_software respectively?
Thanks,
Kris.

Good morning vkambham,
We are trying to implement APM portfolio in the NY version. In our current environment there are under 30 Applications that were identified as Desktop Software. Do you know where these are supposed to be housed so we can use the APM for actual applications in the environment?
Thank you,
Kandi Markwood
