Performance Analytics Guided Setup - "Ever Use It"

Performance Analytics Guided Setups, walk you through enabling and validating Analytics and reporting solutions for the related application. After you complete a guided setup, you can collect data and view indicator scores on the Analytics Hub and on the preconfigured Solutions dashboard.

Like any new plugin or app, always set up and test Analytics and Reporting Solutions on a non-production instance before enabling them in production.

If a product has a Performance Analytics guided setup, use the guided setup to activate and configure the associated Analytics and Reporting solution quickly and consistently.

If a guided setup is not available for a Solution, you can install that Solution from the Plugins list. If the Solution is not on the Plugins list, look for it on the ServiceNow store.

So now that we know how and where to access the Guided Setup, let's talk through the different options that are available in the Guided Setup. When you go to the Performance Analytics Guided Setup for the very first time, it may look similar to the screen-shot below.

Using the Guided Setup is a great way to become familiar with every aspect of Performance Analytics. You will be able to look at what makes up your OOTB content, but we also understand that what comes OOTB doesn't fit every situation. So let's talk about what the guided setup goes through and discuss some other things to think about.

  • Indicators - These define repeating measurements of the performance of a business service or process results in a series of scores over time.
    • Does the Indicator need additional conditions? **Remember, using a default Indicator Source as the basis of your data, is always best. However, you can add additional conditions to your Indicators to better fine-tune them for your needs. Maybe doing and Insert and Stay is something to think about as well, to preserve the default Indicator.**
    • Become familiar with the Indicator and all its settings, to decide if something needs to be changed to fit your business needs. Click here for more information about Indicators.
  • Breakdowns - These add dimensions for analyzing indicator scores in different ways.
    • Decide if the OOTB Breakdowns have all that you need or more than you need.
    • Remove any Breakdowns that are not needed. **This will help with collection times, as well.**
    • Add additional Breakdowns if needed. Click here for more information about Breakdowns.
  • Data Collection Jobs - These collect data from operation transactional tables in the ServiceNow platform.
    • Look at the Data Collection Jobs that have been created OOTB. In most cases, you will see a Daily & Historical Job.
  • Analytics Hub - This display collects scores for an indicator. You can explore indicator scores through time-series, breakdowns, aggregations, and other means.
  • Widgets - These display indicators and breakdowns graphically, in reusable blocks, and provide a range of visualizations appropriate to different types of analysis.
    • Look at the Widgets that come OOTB, determine if what is there works for your business needs.
    • Here is a ServiceNow Doc that defines each type of Widget that can be used: Performance Analytics Widgets
    • Add and remove widgets based on business needs.
  • Dashboards - These position multiple widgets on pages in a flexible layout and organize the widgets thematically into tabs that share relevant performance data with different stakeholders.
    • Check out the dashboards that come OOTB. These dashboards are extensive in what they cover and they include many widgets that can work for many personas in your business.
    • Here is a ServiceNow Doc that talks through Dashboards: Performance Analytics Dashboards.

Let's go through reviewing one of the Tasks for the Incident Management Guided Setup. You can see in the video below how it works:

  • Click Get Started.
  • Click Configure for Review Indicator Source
  • Take notice of the OOTB Indicator Sources that come with Incident Management.
Note: Generally, the pre-configured Indicator Source will fulfill all the data needs that you have.
  • Click into each Indicator Source, so that you can:
    • Familiarize yourself with how it is pulling data.
    • Confirm this is how you need the Indicator Source to pull data.
    • Pay close attention to how the Conditions are configured. *Dates not STATES*
  • Take notice of the OOTB Indicators that are using the Indicator Source.
  • When you have looked at all the Indicator Sources, click on Back to Guided Setup.
  • Click on Mark as Complete.

You have completed the Tasks associated with Indicator Sources. You would continue to do this with all other Tasks.

Take the time to add Distinct Descriptions when a Description text box is available. Some of these come OOTB pre-filled but others do not, so if you see one that is not pre-filled, do yourself a favor and put a detailed description of what the Indicator Source, Indicator, Data Collection Job, Widget, etc. Take this opportunity to use terms that will resonate with your users. Here is a great Blog that talks through this: Create Value with "Descriptions" in Performance Analytics Components

Once you have completed a Task, you will see that the overall progress tracker will change to the percentage that you have completed. You can continue to go through the tasks to become more familiar with that is available OOTB.
