Reporting on created Metric definitions

I have been unable to determine how to report on the Metric definitions I have created. For example: If I created a metric for the "project" table and "state" field so that I could calculate how long the project was in each state. How would I pull a report to show that metric definition for the state field?

Thomas thank you for your reply and information. I understand that I need to report off of the pm_project_metric table. I suppose my question is when I create a metric will it only report on new data or will it allow historical reporting as well? 

Once the metric is created it will capture data going forward.  It will not be able to look backwards, because other things may have changed and it doesn't know what those changes are unless the metric is looking for changes.
