Equipment ID field doesn't search for contains but rather using start by when searching, it should search for the words without using * also

Take a look at this KB article, it shows you how to set up the system property to do a contains search by default rather than a starts with. ServiceNow does starts with by default for performance, as searching contains on all fields would cause performance loss
