Why do pie charts not display correctly for future dates?

Hi all,

I may be being a bit dense, so please feel free to point out if I am being.

I'm running a report for "Show me a pie chart for all the future warranty dates for Dell items".

My filter is along the lines of:

  • Warranty Date After Today
  • Manufacturer is Dell

In a list view, it pulls the list correctly, in a pie chart view it shows this:

Any ideas?

I raised a Hi ticket for help with this. It's not an error - apparently Report Ranges aren't designed to work with future dates, this is the full response:

This issue was tracked in a Problem record PRB630400 ==> Bar charts grouped by a date column cannot display records in the future. An enhancement task FTASK30090 was also created but this was not prioritized and hence this problem was closed as this is not a Problem defect with the following comment "Not a defect, simply a consequence of design. Report Ranges were never intended to support future dates."

I have linked this ticket to the PROBLEM record.

What I can do is associate this ticket with the problem ticket. It may not get fixed but it will put some weight on the issue such that an enhancement may be approved.

Ah well 😞

Add the field you are grouping by and the field you are aggregating (computer?) in the list view.  It certainly looks like we are hitting some null issue.  Do any other types work (e.g., bar chart)?  It looks like the aggregate field may have the issue.

I've exported the list of the data, there's no nulls in either field. The dates in the warrenty_expiration field range from 1st Dec 2018 to 8th July 2024. There's a duplicate in the "name" field, but even with that removed, there's still no data displayed in the chart.

A "Single Score" is generated, but nothing with a visualisation is.

If I change the filter to "before" today rather than "after" today it's fine. I'm wondering if there's an issue with aggregating data so far into the future?
