STORY: “Hannah and the Case of the Missing Hardware Assets”
_____________________________________
Prologue – BrambleStatic*, Hannah Anderson, and Hardware Asset Management
This is the story of one company’s journey from:
Reactive IT Hardware Asset Management to proactive management
Spending on new hardware without knowing what hardware is available
Rough estimates of hardware counts TO detailed and accurate information on what is owned and where it is located…
Painful and lengthy asset refreshes TO a smooth, controlled process…
Fearing the unknown and expecting risks will just happen TO up-front and continual risk mitigation…
So let’s begin…
BrambleStatic, Inc.* is a Fortune 500 company with revenue of $64.5B. They have 163 locations globally across 76 countries with 386,235 employees. They also have 5 data centers geographically dispersed in 4 countries.
BrambleStatic* doesn’t have an accurate view of how many hardware assets they have. They estimate around ~6.7M but don’t really know for sure.
A few years ago, BrambleStatic* had their network hacked. They believe they completely stopped the intrusion, but the result of the audit was an estimated inventory of their connected devices:
~2.33 devices per employee
~35,000 devices per location (not employee devices)
~24,000 devices per datacenter
They could not get any more precise than that.
BrambleStatic* does not have a complete picture of where devices are currently located, who is using them, what software is on them, and if they should be using the devices anymore.
They use ServiceNow’s Discovery and a few external device management tools, so they have an idea of what is in the environment. They have a CMDB that is updated by Discovery with integrations to the other tools. ITSM Asset Management has created hardware asset records in ServiceNow for them, but that is the extent of their use of Asset Management in ServiceNow.
Many departments still track IT asset information on spreadsheets. This information is often not current and rarely shared between departments.
Hannah Anderson is the IT Asset Manager at BrambleStatic*.
Hannah and BrambleStatic* need help. Hannah knows they could greatly reduce hardware asset spend by managing their hardware devices better.
They chose ServiceNow’s Hardware Asset Management to help them.
Let’s take the journey with Hannah as she transforms Hardware Asset Management at BrambleStatic*!
