Effort and risk: SAM Pro vs SAM Plugin

Hi Community,

I work for an organisation managing about 5000 endpoints and considering a SAM solution. We'd initially look to manage Microsoft and VMWare software. Most MS office products are O365.

I'm very interested to get a sense of 

a) The implementation overhead of SAM Pro Vs SAM Plugin

I understand that I'd have to get entitlement details into the system in either case. In SAM Plugin I'd also have to create software models

b) The maintenance effort of SAM Pro Vs SAM Plugin

I'd need to maintain the models and do more manual auditing with the SAM Plugin. Anything else?

If you have any feel, I'd also be interested to know your thought on compliance risk - SAM Free (where there is increased chance of human error) vs SAM Pro (where the technology might give a false sense of security?)

Ben,

Three things immediately come to mind:

1. If your organization is using the Kingston release, the in-platform capability is called 'SAM Foundation'. This replaces the SAM Plugin which was available in pre-Kingston releases.

2. ServiceNow include Microsoft, O365 and VMWare 'publisher packs' in the licensable SAM Professional product. This removes any requirement to create custom, complex license metrics for these publishers, enables automatic reconciliation with your purchased entitlements and provides easy integrations with vCenter and the O365 admin centre.

3. In my view, the big difference between the SAM Foundation and SAM Professional is that with SAM Foundation you would need to manually normalise all of your discovered software installations to enable the calculation of effective license positions.
