Managing License Consumption Priority in SAM Pro

Hi everyone,

I'm facing a scenario in ServiceNow SAM Pro where our client has both Enterprise Edition and Professional Edition licenses. The Enterprise Edition includes downgrade rights, meaning installations that qualify for Professional Edition can still consume Enterprise Edition licenses.

The challenge is that whenever there are Enterprise Edition-specific installations, the system prioritizes consuming Enterprise Edition licenses first, which are more expensive.

For example:

  • 700 total installations
  • 100 installations require Enterprise Edition
  • Entitlements: 350 for Professional Edition and 370 for Enterprise Edition

Currently, the system tends to use Enterprise Edition licenses before utilizing Professional Edition entitlements, even when a Professional Edition license would suffice.

  • There are no allocations set up.
  • I've also tried using Software Model Conditions, but it hasn’t been helpful in this scenario.

Is there a way to configure SAM Pro to ensure that installations only consume Enterprise Edition licenses when absolutely necessary, while defaulting to Professional Edition licenses for other installations to reduce costs?

Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @Sujithra Govind,

"The challenge is that whenever there are Enterprise Edition-specific installations, the system prioritizes consuming Enterprise Edition licenses first, which are more expensive."

I would say that this behavior is correct, since the attributes of the installations (Publisher, Product, Edition) refer to the Enterprise Edition. And as you described at the beginning, the downgrade feature in SAMP allows the Professional Edition to be covered by Enterprise Edition entitlements.

Unfortunately, the license prioritization feature you want is not yet possible. Please refer to the ServiceNow idea portal for more information.

Best, Dennis
