What are the differences between Assets and CI's

Hi All, 

 

I am new to this ITAM world and i am looking for basic understanding between Assets and CI's?

If anyone could explain with an example it would be of great help

Assets  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Configuration Items

Refers to any resource that is owned or controlled by an organizationA component of an IT infrastructure
Has value and is expected to provide a return on investmentCritical to the delivery of IT services
Can be tangible (e.g. computers, servers, or other hardware) or intangible (e.g. software, licenses, or intellectual property)Can be any component that is essential to delivering an IT service, including hardware, software, networks, applications, and documentation
Managed and tracked to varying degrees, depending on their importance to the organizationManaged and tracked closely in a Configuration Management System (CMS)
Can be used for a variety of purposes, including generating revenue or supporting business operationsUsed specifically to ensure that IT services are delivered efficiently and effectively

The short version that I've always been told:

Assets are tied to budget.  Depreciation, warranty, maintenance renewal, support, (total cost) etc are all part of the asset.

CI's are tied to operation and metrics.  Incidents, business processes, down time, (cost to operate) all tied to the CI.

 

They are ways to represent data to different groups depending on what they want to know.  I think the other definition you received is the longer version of that same idea.
