When it comes to handling **appliances** in a CMDB, the key is deciding how deep you want to track them.
In most environments, we treat appliances (HVAC units, refrigerators, washers, etc.) as **managed assets** rather than full configuration items unless they have network dependencies or maintenance SLAs. We usually record:
* Model and serial number
* Installation location
* Warranty and lifecycle status
* Maintenance history and service vendors
Linking appliances to incidents and work orders has been especially useful for tracking recurring failures and planning replacements. For teams that also support residential or light commercial environments, having a standardized appliance inventory makes coordination with repair providers much easier—similar to how service-focused platforms like appliancerepairok.com approach appliance tracking and maintenance workflows.
This keeps the CMDB clean while still giving enough visibility for support and asset management.
