I have a question regarding the knowledge article categories. We have started using knovledgev3 since upgrading using multiple languages but it seems that we cannot have the category of a knowledge artcile translated. The label and value of a kb_category record are of type "string" therefore we cannot have a category in french to have a different value than the same category in English. Can you please advise what is the ServiceNow approach to managing the same category in different languages?

Hi Simeon,
In Helsinki, the categories are of String Type and in Instanbul, it has been changed to Translated Field. I suppose you are working on a version lower than Istanbul. I checked the translation prefix for Label field and it shows as GMLD. It means you should add localization in System Localization > Field Labels.
For translation a knowledge category in your instance for eg: General, You can add the following entry in Field Labels module. For each language add a new entry by replacing the Label.

Custom fields/strings are not translated, you need to translate them manually. Please see this documentation that describes how you can translate customizations:

The kb_category is already defined as "Translated Text" type. You can define the values in different languages which ServiceNow will display based on the user's preference.
Below is an example with English and Spanish. I'm assuming the default language in your ServiceNow environment is "English".
1. Log in as System Administrator
2. Activate the alternate language Spanish by going to System Definition > Plugins and activating the I18N: Spanish Translations plugin.
3. Navigate to the Knowledge Category:
- Go to Knowledge > Administration > Knowledge Bases and select your Knowledge Base from the list.
- Scroll down to the Knowledge Categories in the Related Links section.
- Select and edit the Knowledge Category for which you want to define the Spanish translation.
- Change the language to Spanish by selecting it from the user Settings at the top right of the screen.
- The values you type in the Label and Value fields will be stored in Spanish.
You can then test this by adding an article to this Knowledge Base. The category label will be different based on the user language selected in the Settings.

Hi Alikutty, that makes sense we are on Helsinki so the field type is stil string. That answered my question.
