What is the current recommended solution for regular planned maintenance of CIs?

I have a requirement to set up regular scheduled maintenance plans/schedules for either models or types of CIs that have certain maintenance requirements. I don't feel like the documentation has examples that truly apply to what I'm trying to do, and it's not written in a very intuitive way.

My initial plan was to use Planned Maintenance to leverage Maintenance Plans and Maintenance Schedules, but then when starting to configure them I'm not really sure the best way to go about it, and how Schedule Templates work into all of it.

To start with the most basic example, I need to create a maintenance plan/schedule to check the batteries in a device every 30 days and generate a task that the responsible support group can use to track the maintenance performed.

I decided to do this as a model-based plan, selected the model, checked "Apply to new matching records", and set task creation to "Add to existing" (which I think just adds to already open tasks instead of creating new ones?).

Next, I created the maintenance schedule triggering on duration with an interval of 30 days:

Once this is set up, I assume a Schedule Template is required to generate a task of some kind? If I go to create a new one, I'm redirected to an interceptor, and none of the options are what I want, and it's not obvious to me how I would generate a task like sc_request with this.

In the end, what I really need to accomplish is:

  1. Create maintenance plans/schedules that apply to specific models and/or CIs.
  2. Plan/schedule runs based on the interval specified (30 days, 90 days, 1 year, etc.)
  3. A task is generated for all matching CIs. Preferably a template would be applied to the task to keep any special instructions consistent.

It seems like it should be a pretty simple thing to configure, but with the multiple layers of related records associated with a plan I'm not too confident that I am doing this correctly. Does anyone have suggestions or resources better than the documentation to configure the feature?
