Has anyone successfully implemented a Citizen Developer programme on ServiceNow?

Hi all,

We're exploring the idea of launching a Citizen Developer programme for our power users (& few non ServiceNow developers) and I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually done this, not just theory but real implementation experience.

Specifically I'm trying to understand:

  • Did you manage to get it off the ground, and is it still running? What does "success" look like for you in this context?
  • What were the biggest challenges you ran into, technically or organisationally? Governance, quality control, people wanting to do too much too fast?
  • What risks materialised that you didn't anticipate upfront?
  • What guardrails did you put in place? 
  • How was the code review done to ensure code quality?
  • How did you handle the boundary between citizen developers and your core platform team? Where did you draw the line on what they could and couldn't touch?
  • Any advice on tooling within ServiceNow to support this, App Engine Studio, delegated development, that kind of thing?

Would really appreciate any honest takes, including things that didn't work.
