Hi My name is Nehal Chavda. So blessed to have community like this. As a ServiceNow RiseUp Alumni with experience in UX Research & Design and Gen AI (Now Assist), I’m currently exploring the best career path where I can truly grow and make an impact.
At the same time, I’m a busy mom with a big family, so finding a role that offers growth, flexibility, and stability is very important to me.
I’m curious to learn from this amazing community:
1. What roles or career paths would you recommend for someone with my background?
2.Where should I focus to find the right opportunities—ServiceNow, UX, Business Analysis, or AI-focused roles?
3.Any advice on balancing career growth with family life? Thank you so much in advance!

Hi @NehalC
I’m a ServiceNow trainer and happy to share my thoughts with anyone beginning their ServiceNow journey.
ServiceNow is growing rapidly in both breadth and depth. The best way to start is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification, which builds a solid foundation in platform fundamentals, terminology, and core modules. Once you gain hands-on experience through CSA, you can decide your next learning path.
Employers value professionals with multi-module expertise, so after completing CSA, consider exploring areas like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps to broaden your portfolio.
Currently, the training is free, which is a great opportunity — though the real challenge lies in gaining hands-on experience. To overcome this, spend at least 1–2 hours a day engaging with the ServiceNow Community — read discussions, answer questions, and share your insights to strengthen your understanding and confidence.
If your goal is to become a developer, focus on building scripting skills using resources available on developer.servicenow.com. Regular practice will enhance your technical expertise.
Start with the CSA and then choose your direction based on your interests — whether as an Admin, Developer, Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager. A strong foundation will give you the flexibility to explore any of these paths.
Welcome to this vibrant community space where you can connect, collaborate, and grow. Share your ideas, seek guidance, and contribute to collective learning.
To take the next step, register on Now Learning and begin your ServiceNow learning journey today.

Hi and welcome to the Community @NehalC,
And thank you for sharing your story. It is always inspiring to see people who manage both career growth and family life. Wishing you a lot of success on your journey.
Regarding your questions, it is honestly not easy to give one clear recommendation. Career paths in the ServiceNow ecosystem can vary depending on your past experience, industry background and what kind of role you personally aim to become.
What was your previous experience and role? Do you prefer rather functional, technical, UX or business roles?
There is no single “best” answer that fits everyone.
I would also recommend checking the official ServiceNow learning resources and career journeys as seen below. ServiceNow provides well-defined paths that can help you explore roles and see what skills, trainings or exams are needed for each one.

Hello @NehalC ,
welcome to the community 😀
Your background in ServiceNow RiseUp, UX Research & Design, and GenAI (Now Assist) is actually a very powerful combination in today’s market. From an experienced developer’s perspective, roles like ServiceNow Business Analyst or even a Now Assist/GenAI Functional Consultant would suit you really well, as they blend user experience, business understanding, and emerging AI capabilities without requiring heavy coding. Instead of choosing only one path, I’d strongly recommend focusing on the intersection of ServiceNow, UX, and AI—this niche is rare and highly valued. In terms of opportunities, explore roles in ServiceNow (especially ITSM/CSM), UX for portals/workspaces, and AI-driven automation use cases. For balancing career and family life, functional roles like BA or UX tend to offer better flexibility, including remote or hybrid options, compared to core development roles. The key is to build a strong niche where you can grow steadily while maintaining work-life balance. You’re definitely on a promising path—wishing you all the best 😊 .
If this helps you then mark it as helpful and accept as solution.
Regards,
Aditya

Hello @NehalC ,
Following is basic roadmap to start with servicenow learning .
When you start exploring ServiceNow PDI, begin with understanding the basic platform UI:
Application Navigator, Banner, Content Frame (UI16)
Explore Forms and List Views
Company Branding and changing the Welcome Page
Context Menu (what it is and its types)
Breadcrumbs and how they work
Next, move on to data modeling basics:
Table and Field creation
Table dependencies and Table Extensions
Field types
Views
Important OOTB tables like User (sys_user), Group (sys_user_group), Role (sys_user_role), Delegations
Once you are comfortable with this, explore core configuration concepts:
Reference Qualifiers
Dot-walking
UI Policies
Dictionary Overrides
ACLs
Priority Lookup
Difference between Configuration vs Customization
Then understand data movement and backup concepts:
Update Sets (how to take backup of your work)
Update Set transfer methods
Import Sets
After learning these basics, you can confidently move forward to explore Service Management modules like:
Incident
Problem
Change
Request
And then deep dive into the Development part.
Then start with Certified System Administrator (CSA) – First & Mandatory
CSA is the basic and most important certification for ServiceNow beginners
It helps you understand how the ServiceNow platform works
Main topics to focus on:
Platform UI and navigation
Tables, fields, forms, and list views
Users, groups, and roles
Basic ITSM concepts
UI Policies, Client Scripts, and Business Rules (basic understanding)
Best practices:
Practice each topic in your Personal Developer Instance (PDI)
Do not just memorize answers—try to understand why a feature is used and when to use it
After ITSM Module , another important module is HRSD (Human Resources Service Delivery), which helps organizations automate and manage HR-related services for employees. HRSD provides capabilities such as employee case management, HR service catalogs, knowledge management for HR policies, and onboarding or offboarding processes. This allows employees to easily request HR services like leave approvals, employment verification letters, or onboarding tasks through a centralized portal.

Hi @NehalC
Tips for the CSA Exam (Certified System Administrator)
CSA is the first and foundational exam in your ServiceNow journey. Here are some tips to help you prepare effectively:
-
Study the training material thoroughly – Go through it line by line, word by word, at least 2–3 times.
-
Practice the labs multiple times – Do each lab 3–4 times. Don’t just complete them; carefully read and understand the instructions as well.
-
Follow the official eBook – Review it thoroughly at least 2–3 times to reinforce your understanding.
-
Consider supplementary courses – Some candidates have found Udemy courses helpful for additional practice and clarity.
-
Watch my experience video – I’ve shared my own preparation journey and tips here:
