I want to understand permission in knowledge base. How hierarchy of permissions works in Servicenow

I want to understand how permissions are assigned for knowledge base and it's article. 

Modern SN permissions use user criteria to restrict a users’ view and contribute access to knowledge articles, catalog items. List of SN groups, user members of these groups to qualify for this criterion. Groups are used to bulk assign roles to users. Groups can have a parent group. The members of the child group are not members of the parent group. I want to know if it is really the case ?

I build a search solution , if we do not honor these system properties. what data leak scenarios we can expect.
