I know we need to CSDM for CMDB implementation. However, I read ServiceNow documentation regarding CSDM and Asset mgmt.
The doc mentioned CSDM is optional to Asset implementation.
Can any CSDM expert answer my following questions?
- Why CSDM is optional to Asset development?
- When we need to use CSDM for Asset?
- What are the benefits to use CSDM for asset
- If we need CSDM for asset, can we use CSDM framework for both CMDB and Asset development together?

Good discussion. While I agree with a lot of the ideas and explanations, I would also add that CSDM is relevant to Asset management because Configuration Management is relevant to Asset Management. An asset's lifecycle is inclusive of the operational lifecycle of its related CI. If you don't manage the operational lifecycle of the CI, this undermines the effectiveness of your asset lifecycle management. In order to manage the operational lifecycle of the CI, you need to do so in the context of the various Services that it is used to provide. That's where CSDM comes in. So, while the various data elements involved in CSDM may not be directly related to Asset Management (aside from the Foundational elements), the value realized through CSDM is most certainly beneficial to Asset Management as a whole.

Good day Alberta,
you can also see the need from CSDM (maturity) in context of the needs (stakeholders).
ITSM processes are using a different part of CSDM than eg APM or SecOps:
ITSM
ITSM is in context of Services (Supporting and Consuming Services)
SecOps / APM
SecOps / APM is in context of 'are my Business Application deployments vulnerable / compliant' (also cost).
in this scenario the Infra - / App CIs it 'rolling up' eg Model data to Application Service records to be used in Business Applications.
Without asking if anything is needed it might be the roadmap that drives the needs/maturity level of implementation.
If short term focus is purely ITSM there is less need for asset aspects. In practice there is probably a need anyway, but maybe not in the scope/step of the implementation.
I think you can/need to slice and dice CSDM to implement/mature it step by step.
BR,
Barry

Hi Alberta
Here is my 2cent, CSDM is relevant for Asset Management, as Asset Management is all about the financial/cost management.
If you want to roll up cost etc. to services, offerings, portfolios, contracts etc. then you will benefit of having your Software Asset/Hardware Asset/Datacenter/Facility Assets linked to these logical data objects.
Just found this from ServiceNow - CSDM Architect group:
