SAP Business Applications & Application Services

Hello,

We've probably handled this differently than some. My organization is currently manually gathering Business Applications and Application Services. We do not have ITOM and it's not really on our roadmap as of now. We've been asked to build out our CMDB to encompass SAP. We actually started with our Application Services as it was easier to identify our SIDs and align those to Environment records with designated ownership.

However, as we move up the model, we are struggling to figure out how to manage our SAP landscape as Business Applications. Mostly because a SID for us is not 1 for 1 with a Business Application. We also operate regional ERP's that are a mix of On Prem and Cloud as we continue our transformation journey. And example of how we are thinking to approach this is below:

Business App [Platform Host - Parent] = SAP (ECC or S4HANA) NA

Business App [Platform App - Child] = SAP Order Management NA, SAP Finance NA, SAP HR NA, ETC.

Application Services = SAP ECC <SID> Prod NA, SAP ECC <SID> Test NA, ETC.

Note: We use the SID in the Application Service Name as most people in the organization know the environments by these ID's. Additionally, they are called out individually in Aliases.

Does anyone have experience with building out strategic business applications for SAP? How did you handle this?

Hi Stig Brandt.

Thank you very much. I will use this as a base.

Hi @Stig Brandt ,

Could you please educate me with entry point examples:

For SAPGui using Application Server or Message server

For Solution Manager ChaRM process to connect to S/4 HANA for Monitoring.

For Transport Management System (TMS) between Dev --> QA --> Stg --> Prd

@Stig Brandt very useful!

These screenshots are part of the very helpful CSDM Data Model Examples doc available within NowCreate.

Hi Mike,

The BA SAP ECC NA has no relation with the several Platform apps in my opinion. The Platform apps have their own BA's I should suggest.

The red marked ASs depends on the SAP ECC NA Prod AS. Tickets can be assigned to the team supporting the single production instance using Technical service offerings with the same Assignment group  and related them to the Prod instance and the Application instances.
Business Services and Business Service Offerings can 'determine' the different instances as in most of the cases the performance towards the users is different for Prod and Non-Prod instances.

Probably I do not correctly recall from your mail what you exactly mean. Let me know!

Cheers,

Ed

Thanks @Stig Brandt for the diagrams. In this context, it is not yet entirely clear to me where the following CI classes are to be mapped:

  1. SAP Applications [cmdb_ci_appl_sap] and its subclasses
    1. SAP ASCS Application
    2. SAP CI Application
    3. SAP DI Application
  2. SAP Systems [cmdb_ci_sap_sid]
  3. SAP HANA Databases [cmdb_ci_appl_sap_hana_db]

Generally they have to be mapped at the application service level. But after looking at the suggested relations in the CI Class Manager, I'm still unsure about the hierarchies between these classes. Is the hierarchy logic

  • Application Service depends on SAP Application
  • SAP Application uses SAP System

?

But at which level do I assign Servers / HANA Data Bases? Has anybody an example with fully mapped infrastructure?
