One item I left off the prior blog related to organizing Taxonomy was to keep the taxonomy structure relevant by promoting popular pages by setting the order to lower values in the order to position them higher in the menu tree where possible.
So how can we determine what's popular? This information can be gathered from using four tools: Portal Analytics, Search Analytics, Performance Analytics and Google Analytics. While I've never seen all of these incorporated together, hopefully it will give some ideas toward developing a strategy.
- Portal Analytics can be leveraged to provide page views per topic page, tracking unique visitors to the page, and how much time the use spent on the topic page. This can be found in docs here.
- Getting information related to search frequency and clicks is where Search Analytics can step in. Logging in these areas will show which topics are most frequently searched, what is accessed from search results and click-through rates tied to specific topic terms.
- The third method is through Performance Analytics. Indicators can be configured for page views can then be set to breakdown by topic. This will allow for filtering based on topic context.
- Finally, Google Analytics can be incorporated into a portal by connecting it in the portal theme. (Some instructions are here). When enabled, this will provide in-depth information related to page views, scroll depth and navigation paths.
