This post will look at organizing Taxonomy to manage Topic Pages. The structure is what will make them show up in the Mega Menu right where you want them. It will give users a logical A to B path going from one page to another. This is where the work done with the business to be organized and well thought out pays off with a good page hierarchy.

What are some ways to go about this?

  1. Start with Topics that fit the business but be sure that you put employee experience first. Use terms in the Topic names that will make sense to the people using the portal.
  2. As you refine the Topics, work to streamline them to reduce the confusion that can come while tracking things down in the page tree. By default ESC only allows for a topic tree three levels deep. You can expand this using Advanced Portal Navigation, but you should keep that in your back pocket if you can't find a more shallow structure.
  3. Avoid catchalls like Other for Topic names because again…employee experience! It's always work on projects to resist the urge use Other, but the Content benefits from finding an actual home for it.
  4. Include governance processes for adding content to the pages. Keeping content aligned to the correct topic is important to the overall experience and benefits from a governance process to be sure it's properly categorized for the long term.
  5. As part of the governance process, verify the criteria for content on each page. Pages that you expect to be a part of the topic tree can go missing if criteria doesn't allow any of the associated content to be viewed.
