How model substitutes are supposed to work (OTB)

I have a very difficult time understanding how model substitutes should work. I went trough the documentation; trainings and any community post I could find.

In the product documentation there isn`t much but it does state

“Substitute models can be used with work management transfer orders. Substitute models are not used in procurement part sourcing.” – but even that I can`t understand.

I`ll be very grateful if someone can explain that to me. I tested with:

I have Model A and Model B. For ease of testing each is substitute to the other. Now in a Stockroom I have one Asset available from Model B.

When I make a request for Model A – my expectations are that the sourcing task will somehow show me that I have a Local stock of item B as substitute.

I don`t see the “Transfer order” playing any role here as the substitute is available in the same location?

I also tested having one available substitute Asset in a Stockroom with set Service Location but still no option in the sourcing task.

I feel I`m missing something!

We reached out to ServiceNow support referencing a different community post in which they claimed SN would be releasing this as a product enhancement.
https://www.servicenow.com/community/itsm-forum/sourcing-assets-using-compatible-or-subsitute-models...
SN support confirmed with Product team that this is on the roadmap but wouldnt commit to a release date.
We have backlogged this requirement and are planning to implement net custom until SN product team provides as GA but will have to actively monitor release notes because SN support closed our case without linkage to product feature/enhancement as we had requested
