We have been, up until now, importing our Assets manuall using CSV sheets. Also, any new assets we've been adding by going into a location's stockroom, clicking new, and adding items to the stockroom. All of these items are being added to ALM_Asset.
We are now wanting to link these items with the CMDB and I'm confused how to go about this. I have read that there is a way to use a business rule for any new assets, which I am going to look at implementing, however, how does one go about syncing up existing assets with the CMDB? Removing them and re-entering them into the system isn't an option.. is there some other way to link them and create new CIs from them?

When you create an Asset, you need to identify the Model Category. This Model Category should have a corresponding CI class that identifies if a CI should be created to go with the Asset. Unfortunately, if you do not already have a CI class on the Model Category, then you need to create a new Model Category that has both the CI and Asset class identified. Then you could potentially script something to do a change of the existing Model Category to the new Model Category.

Hi Ben, thank you for your reply.
So in our case, I have created Assets and as you mentioned, all were created with a Model Category. I have set up categories that are to be used for all of our assets (Mobile Phone, Desktop, Desk Phone etc)
When I look in our Configuration > Base Items list, I see a variety of items, but they do not necessarily correspond with these model categories. There are ~80 assets that appear to be connected, however we have thousands of assets in total.
What you're suggesting (if I understand correctly) is to go through and manually create new categories that are the same as the ones already existing? (so create a new "Desktop" category?)
and "that has both the CI and Asset class identified." < how am I able to determine this? If I go to create a Category for example, I do not see anything that allows me to configure this relationship..

Vlad, I sent you a friend request in the community. Maybe we can coordinate a screenshare to look at this together. That might be easier than trying to go back and forth with messages here.

Ben - I know this thread is several months old, but I have a very similar thing I am trying. I've posted it in at the location here if you don't mind looking. Thank you! Change model category of laptops using Discovery
