Cannot allocate more licenses than rights.

When attempting to add a device or user entitlement to a software asset record that already has entitlements equaling the assets rights the message "Cannot allocate more licenses than rights" is displayed. We have license agreements that allow us to over allocate licenses with an annual true up so we have a need to disable this functionality.

I found this message embedded in the business rule "Allocated more licenses than rights". Upon finding this business rule I set it's active status to false and it continues to block additional entitlements. I then deleted the business rule and I still continue to be blocked from adding additional entitlements beyond the asset rights.

Any help in turning off this functionality is greatly appreciated.

Go back to your original entitlement record and change the agreement type to "Enterprise License Agreement" then reconciliation will allow you to allocate up to the number of your last true-up which is what I assume you are using as the number of rights purchased.

Subsequent installs will be listed as unlicensed installs but the reconciliation engine will mark the product as compliant.

When you true-up again, then either add another entitlement for the additional purchases or retire the original entitlement and put in the current amount of licenses from your true-up.

Hi Wilbur,

I have reviewed my entitlement record and I am unable to find the Agreement Type field. I'm assuming this is a field available through SAM Pro which my company does not have at this time.

Hi Nate,

The ITAM BU Product Management team is aware of this request and has on its roadmap the ability to make reservations for O365 licenses.  Please look for the reservations feature in a future release.  We do not yet have a method to allow over allocation, nor is it currently on our roadmap.

For customers reviewing this thread somewhere in the future, the current release as of this post is New York.  Future releases in development and planning are Orlando and Paris.

This post contains a forward looking statement about potential product features.  While the identified feature is on the roadmap, it is possible that prior to product release, the identified feature may be deprioritized and the feature may not make the final release.
