Hi
We are running discovery for CMDB using SCCM
We are discovering each CI successfully however we, discover the CI hardware model number in the CI record.
We would like discovery to populate the Model Number on the model record and use the model number on the model record to display on the CI form
Currently discovery is populating the model number on the CI form but this is not reflected on the model number on the model record
I have included the CI record and Model record screen shots for reference
Not sure if I'm going against any best practices trying to do it this way.
Any help would be appreciated
Regards

The OOTB Best Practice is to create the asset record first (following procurement/receipt) which is linked to the hardware model. This auto-creates the CI record which includes links to the hardware model and the asset record. You can easily set up a rule that stops the auto-creation of asset records when a CI is discovered without a corresponding CI/asset record - this would eliminate the problem that you've described.
I'm not sure if this totally addresses your problem, because I'm sure there are nuances in your business processes which need to be explored.

The Model ID should reside as an attribute on the hardware model record and represents the ID assigned by the manufacturer to a specific product. This ID could be different to what is collected from discovery sources. What are your business rules for creating CI and asset records ?

OK - I should have asked the question differently ! 🙂
Are you using the Asset Management module in SN or just auto-creating asset records from the CI record created via the SCCM discovery feed ?

Yes.... We are using the Asset Management module in SN and setup hardware models to auto create Asset record in SN.
We have also setup Asset-CI Field mapping to auto populate CI fields from Asset fields.
Its when we go the other way CI -> Model we run into problems.
In our case the Model number on the CI form to populate the Model number on Model form
